garnet-dodecahedron crystals

different colors of grossularite
At the mere mention of the word, garnet, a mental image of a dark brownish red color comes to
mind.  Most garnets seen in inexpensive jewelry are of this color, but the garnet family of minerals
has a surprising variety of colors.  In the photo below there are three dodecahedron crystals of
grossularite (a calcium-aluminum garnet).  One is a pale pink, another green, and one brown, all
colored by impurities.  Other members of the garnet family have even brighter colors of reddish-
purple, orange, dark pink, and dark olive green.
