Ripples in Dark-filled Crater "Lakes"

return to Mawrth Vallis index page

One of the most interesting features found within this high
resolution is the large number of shallow craters that are filled
with a fine-grained dark material.  At first glance these craters
resemble small lakes on Earth, complete with waves.  No other
area on Mars can compete with this large number of lake
look-alikes.  Winds in this area produce ripple dunes within
these craters.
