Course Objectives:
· Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:
· 1. Recognize and identify the most commonly encountered types of fossils and describe different processes of the fossilization process.
· 2. Understand and explain the development of the concepts of geologic time, including, but limited to: absolute geologic time vs. absolute geologic time, the standard geologic time scale, the principles of stratigraphy, and radiometric and related age dating techniques.
· 3. Understand and interpret geologic maps, litho facies maps, paleogeographic maps, isopach maps, and significant symbols
· 4. Understand and explain the formation of the earth's atmosphere, plate tectonics, lines of evidence for biologic evolution, the taxonomic system for plants and animals, and the formation of fold mountain ranges.

A. Tests:
Tests count 80% of the grade. Every test will be announced at least one week in
advance. There will be 4 tests plus the final. Of the first four tests, the one
with the lowest score will be dropped in the calculation of your grade;
consequently there will be no need for a make up test. If there is a bonafide
reason for missing a second test, a make up test will be given. The final is
mandatory and must be taken; the final score cannot be dropped. Each test counts
equally as 20%.
B. Term Assignment:
20% of the total grade will be based
upon a term paper that will be converted to a web page plus other lab assignments. Details and the due date for the
term paper will be on a separate handout.
C. Attendance:
Students who miss more than three class/lab sessions may find themselves dropped
from the course. If you must be absent, please make arrangements with the
instructor prior to leaving. Students have until the Monday of the week that
precedes the final to officially drop from the course with a grade of W.
D. Cheating:
Any student caught cheating on a test will receive a grade of zero % on that
test and this score will not be dropped in the calculation of the student's
grade.
E. Grading:
A grade of “A” is an average of 89.5% and up.
A grade of “B” is an average of 79.5% to 89.4%
A grade of “C” is an average of 69.5% to 79.4%
A grade of “D” is an average of 59.5% to 69.4%
A grade of “F” will doom you to holding “Go Slow” signs on the
highway.
F. Sequence of Topics:
In general, the sequence of topics will follow the sequence in the textbook.
E. Final Test: Final will be on Monday, May 12, 2008 during regular class hours.
