Data & Sources

This site lists the data sent in by various researchers on their lines, and those sources which they cannot link up with.    Because of the quantity of data here you may not want to read it all.    Instead you can use your search option to look for a specific name.    When doing so, do not forget to search for variant spellings (eg. Larkin & Larken).    Happy Hunting!

EXCERPTS FROM A LETTER SENT TO MARK VON DESTINON BY ANOTHER DOLLARHIDE RESEARCHER
WHO WISHES NOT TO BE IDENTIFIED ON THE INTERNET.

Your family group sheet started me into my Indiana records as well as Kentucky. And,
it appears that Jane DOLLARHIDE, and that is the proper spelling, may be a daughter
of Cornelius DOLLARHIDE... however, I have also uncovered another Jane DOLLARHIDE,
this one a daughter of Asahel Dollarhide of Marion Co, IN.

YOU will have to determine which is the father, and I will do my best to present the
vidence as clearly as possible. Now how's that for a genealogical problem?

The strongest evidence is from an item I copied from another person's notes who worked
on the Dollarhide family in Kentucky many years ago. Unfortunately, this data cannot
be verified, unless documentation is obtained, and I have not gone through with that
because it was not a high priority item to my personal line. The woman who did the
research was a Margaret CATE, and as far as I know she may be dead. I made several
attempts to find her, and only received returned mail. Most of her notes were obtained
second-hand, and that is why the information is somewhat cryptic. Mrs. CATE made a
typewritten list of items concerning and every DOLLARHIDE name she found in Kentucky
research. She gave them item numbers, starting with previous states. I will list these
items exactly as I received them:
Item No. 88:	"DOLLARHIDE, Cornelius, patent of land 1806 in Kentucky (sold to Andrew
Campbell, 1812)"
Item No. 90:	"Cornelius DOLLARHIDE wrote will 1809, probated Jan. 1810, names wife:
Jane; son Larkin; daughters, Nancy, Feby (Phebe?) and Jane."
Item No. 60:	"Larkin DOLLARHIDE, born ca. 1803, d. 1837. Married, 19 Nov 1823,
Nancy DODSON. Children: Nancy P., b. Hendricks Co, IN."
Item No. 100:"Larkin DOLLARHIDE m. 19 Nov 1823, Adair County, MO, Nancy DODSON, b. 1808
Wayne Co, KY, Daughter of Leonard and Mary (Randall or Darnalls) DODSON."

Another researcher who provided similar information on the above, was a Max B. Alcorn,
641 S Hudson Ave, Pasadena, CA 91106. He also had a typewritten list, and his No 44
item was nearly identical to Mrs. CATES item 90 above, so he may have done duplicate
research or he obtained the information from her as well.

As to where Cornelius died, there is no question in my mind that it was other than
Pulaski Co, KY. There two DOLLARHIDE families in Pulaski County in 1810: Thomas
and Cornelius. Thomas was a Militia Major during the War of 1812 and later a
Colonel, and member of State Legislature & State Senate of KY. He died in Nov 1821.

Thomas may have been a son of Cornelius, or a brother, I have no firm information
on that.

In a book entitled Kentucky Land Grants, author unknown, page 301, you will find
ref. to Cornelius DOLLARHIDE. "162 acres, 15 March 1806, Pulaski Co, KY on
Pitman Creek. Book 2, p. 556 (from original land records)."

Thomas was granted 150 acres at the same time at the same place. (OOPS, I just read
this again, and Thomas was there in 1798! and so was Cornelius, but Pitman Creek was
then in Lincoln Co, KY).

Looking back at Mrs. Cate's notes, her item 60. Note that Larkin DOLLARHIDE went
to Hendricks Co, IN. That is my strongest evidence that Jane DOLLARHIDE (Larkin's
sister) was a daughter of Cornelius DOLLARHIDE.

The 1830 Federal Census for Hendricks County, Indiana reveals that Larkin was
indeed there: Larken J. DOLLARHIDE 1 male 5-9, 1 male 30-39, 3 females under
5, 1 female 20-29

Another reference to Larkin which I have yet to look into is a will supposedly on
file, See Hoosier Genealogist, Vol. 13, No. 4, (Oct-Dec 1973), page 81.

Larkin was not in the 1840 census for Indiana, nor was Nancy, and she either
suffered an early death like her husband, or remarried. (Perhaps, just left the
area). But in 1850, there was a Leonard L. DOLLAHITE and family, and a Mariam,
age 22, and a "Nancy P." age 14 living with another family. So, this fits in
nicely with the record from item 60, which Mrs. Cate had identified.

Leonard was 25 in 1850, and b. in KY. Nancy and Marion were born in IN. Again,
these three persons appear to be the children of Larkin and Nancy of Pulaski Co.
And since we know that Larkin had a sister named Jane (possibly your Jane),
there is every reason to believe that they were the same person. But wait--
I mentioned that I had another Jane, and this one has perhaps an even
better connection to yours.

By looking at a good map, you can see that Hendricks Co, IN is just west of
Marion Co, where Indianapolis is located. In Decatur twp of Marion Co which
is in the extreme southwest corner of the county, another family lived. The
patriarch of this family was Asahel DOLLARHIDE, who may have been a brother
of Cornelius. They both can be found in VA and NC records, living in the
same places, so the relationship is clearly there, but not quite defined as yet.

Asahel moved into Decatur twp about 1821 or 1822. He had a large family,
and one of his daughters was Jane DOLLARHIDE. She married a Zimri Brown, 14
Nov 1822, according to Marion Co marriage records. To learn more about this
family, and Asahel's offspring, find a copy of B.R. Sulgrove's History of
Indianapolis and Marion Co, IN, pub. by the L.H. Everts Co, 1884: Philadelphia.

Beginning on page 512, which lists early inhabitants of Decatur twp, Marion
Co, it states, "Asahel DOLLARHIDE came from North Carolina...and settled...
in 1821 or 22. He was an upright, honest man and an early member of Liberty
Church. He died about 1840, at the age of eighty-three years..." Also
mentioned were Edmund DOLLARHIDE (who was quite a character), John DOLLARHIDE,
Absalom DOLLARHIDE, and in mentioning a Zimri Brown, "...who married a
daughter of Asahel DOLLARHIDE..." we learned later that her name was Jane.

Perhaps more interesting is the description in Sulgrove's book on page 518 of
the first members of Liberty Church. Not only were John and Rachel DOLLARHIDE
mentioned, but so were Phebe SPICKELMOIR and Mary SPICKELMOIR.

As you can see, this appears to connect the Dollarhide family and the
Spickelmier family in Marion Co at a time (1826-27) when your Jane was in the
process of getting married to a Spickelmier. And Decatur twp, Marion Co, is
only 10 miles away from Brown twp, Hendricks Co, where the DOLLARHIDES over
there lived.

Another clue, Mary and Phebe on your FGS born 1836 and 1840. But Jane may
have named them after her two sisters (?) who both lived in Marion Co along
with the DOLLARHIDES.

This is very strange, but it appears that both cases have merit. Don't you
just hate it, every time we find out something new, it raises more questions
...I think this is called Murphy's law of Genealogical Research.

In any case, you have two Janes. And I cannot tell you which one is the
right one. If you consider that either Cornelius or Asahel is the father,
then go back another generation to the father of both Asahel and Cornelius,
you would be making a cardinal sin of genealogy "don't skip generations."

And in this case, that is good advice, because I don't know for sure who the
father of Cornelius or Asahel is...but have a good idea that it may turn out
to be Francis DOLLARHIDE, who lived in NC from about 1745. This Francis was
probably a Francis DOLLARHIDE, Jr.

From: William W. Dollarhide, letter from 1981
William Dollarhide was connected in 1997 with the American Genealogical
Lending Library and was Executive Editor of the Genealogy Bulletin in
Bountiful, UT. His address was: Genealogy Bulletin, AGLL, 593 West
100 North PO Box 329, Bountiful, UT 84011-0329 and phone: (801) 298-5446.

He has done a lot of work on the family, but Genealogy has become his
business and to my knowledge he no longer replies to personal queries. Oh
well, I get busy too. Someday maybe he will contact one of us, publish
his research, or join us on-line.

NORTH CAROLINA PETITIONS

These two petitions list three Dollarhides in Randolph Co, NC.
Ashel Dollarhide, George Dollerhide, Frank. Dollerhide

The two petitions date from the late 1780s and list many male residents of
Randolph Co, NC. They have been of great value to genealogists in
identifying not only many heads of households living in the new county,
but also many unmarried males, some of whom I believe had not reached
their majority when they signed the petitions. The petitions followed
within 10 years the formation in 1779 of Randolph Co, which before being
formed consisted of the southern third of Guilford Co, Guilford in turn
having been stricken off Orange Co in 1771.
