How Does an Online Class Work?
Online courses are college classes that include requirements for reading, writing papers, class discussions, solving problems, and all other activities you would expect in any other college class. These are not independent study or "self-paced" courses. Online classes start and end on specified dates and they include homework and various activities that are due throughout the course.
Cochise College uses WebStudy as our course management system and most of your work will be completed there. Although communication is generally asynchronous (i.e., you wil not have to log in at a certain time), the actual course content is well-structured and you will have requirements to complete every week.
Online classes are not easier than on-campus classes; in fact, many of our instructors teach the same class both online and face-to-face and they require students to complete the same work regardless of how the course is delivered. Many times, students believe online classes are more difficult because they require a very motivated and well-organized effort to keep up with the work.
Grandfatherly Advice
The Director of the Online Campus created a seven minute video containing Grandfatherly Advice for Online Students. In the video, he offers advice that will help you successfully complete your class; such as what sort of internet connection you need. Before you sign up for an online class, you may want to want to take a look at this video.
Are You Ready For Online Classes?
In order to be successful in online courses, students need to have several basic computer skills. Taking a computer literacy course (such as CIS 116 or CIS 120) is a great start, but may not be enough. Examples of skills necessary for success in an online class include conducting online research, use of email (send, receive, and attachments), and creating a report with a word processing program (such as Microsoft Word).
Readiness Check
You have an opportunity to complete Readi, an Online Readiness Assessment, before registering for an online class. This is a wonderful way to check both your computer to be sure it is ready for class, but to also check your skills to be sure you can successfully complete the activities your instructor requires. The readiness assessment will also provide tips you can use to make you a better online student. Readi takes only a few minutes and is free of charge. To complete your Readi assessment go to: http://cconline.readi.info.

Welcome to WebStudy
Before taking an online course for the first time, you are encouraged to watch the short orientation video linked below. This will introduce you to WebStudy, show you how to log in, and give you some tips on how to start your class. The video is only 6:06 minutes long, so it won't take much time to view.
A quick reference guide is available for students to print out and keep handy.
How Do I Log Into WebStudy?
You can find WebStudy at http://cochise.webstudy.com. It is also linked at the lower right corner of the Cochise College home page.
Your username is your Cochise College Student ID (EXAMPLE: c0000000), and your password is your birth date in a six-digit format (MMDDYY). For instance, if you were born on March 4, 1980, your password would be 030480 (make sure you put only “80” and not “1980").
I'm in WebStudy. How do I view my classes?
After logging into WebStudy, you will start at your dashboard, where you will find announcements and other information summarized for all of your classes. This is a handy page that will help you manage your online time. Access any of your courses by using the drop-down menu located at the top right of the screen.
How Do I Work with a Course?
In your course, you will find a number of tabs on the right side of the screen. Take the time to explore all of the tabs, but the "Timeline" is a good place to start.
To email your instructor, click on the "letter" icon located at the top left of the screen.
