In
this valley
ragged peaks scrape the very clouds from the sky, cutting through the white to reveal the deep blue beyond. In this valley the black of night sky shines like lacquer and the stars sparkle like the eyes of a new born daughter. In this valley rivers tinged with snow flow over rocks worn slick with time, antelope mock the turgid progress of trucks and cars over gravel roads, and a great dusty hawk carries off unlucky prairie dog in its gnarly talons. In this valley teased by a silver sliver of moon and a brilliant Jupiter, we come together to watch the kids sprout in a week eat like Americans watch no TV mix and match margaritas and saddle up and ride the oldest horse in Idaho. In this valley, we shine like the sun and live, for a time, a world apart. Carl Hanni |
